Richard Van Buren (American, b. 1937)
Zamir, 1966
Aluminum, painted
Long-term loan from Miami-Dade Art in Public Places, gift of the J. Patrick Lannan Foundation
Elegant and sparse, Richard Van Buren’s Zamir is a study in weight and balance, as well as a prime example of American Minimalist sculpture. The artist incorporated an unexpected vertical upswing in the core of the sculpture, which appears to push the limits of balance and create visual tension. Van Buren later stated that the introduction of a curved element into an otherwise Minimalist work was considered radical at the time.
Born in New York in 1937, Van Buren studied at San Francisco State College and the University of Mexico. He teaches at Parson School of Design, New York City.
