Harpy Eagle, 2009

Peter Busby
Amazon and Beyond Pavilion
Miami Metrozoo

Soaring over the landscape at 14’ in height is the Harpy Eagle by artist Peter Busby.  Composed of intricately woven hand-bent steel rods, the large-scale sculpture pays homage to the most powerful raptor found in the Americas. Busby, who terms his work as “a three-dimensional drawing in space,” creates positive and negative space within the artwork, allowing the viewer to gaze at the landscape through the sculpture. The dominance and importance of the Harpy Eagle within the Amazonian ecosystem is echoed in Busby’s depiction of the eagle, which is perched on a branch, ready to hunt its prey.
