Silvia Lizama
Glass, oil pigments
Deering Estate

Details of botanical specimens, fossils, bones, and insects found on the Deering Estate provide focus for twelve clerestory windows in the Exhibition Room of the Trailhead Arrival Facility.  A photographer, artist Silvia Lizama has long been interested in the symbols and character of South Florida’s culture and landscape.  Over several years, she has immersed herself in the feeling of the space, taking hundreds of photographs of what she has seen. States Lizama, “My eyes were always drawn by the light and how it falls on the architectural structures, and the variety of plant and animal life.”

Lizama has developed an innovative process to translate her photography to glass.  First, the photographic image is scanned in a computer and simplified.  The simplified image is then sandblasted and etched into thick glass. In a process similar to hand tinting black and white photographs, a method she has used and perfected through the years, Lizama augments the carved glass image with tints of pure color.  The jewel-like windows project light and color, enlivening the interior space.
