Animals of Asia , 2003
Joe Walters
Metrozoo Aviary, 12400 SW 152nd Street
Miami, FL

Representing thirty life forms indigenous to Asia, Animals of Asia presents a glimpse into the delicate balance of a functioning ecosystem. The intentional size discrepancies of the bronze animals suggests all life forms are equal, interdependent contributors to the ecosystem, and each creature is important to the proper functioning of the ecosystem regardless of physical size or its family, genus, or species classification. Walters rendered the sculptures in a sketch-like manner to add vitality to the forms. The artist created rough, highly textured surfaces and green patinas to portray the animals as archeological artifacts, symbolizing the timeless beings that have served to maintain the environments of Asia.
