Roadway Construction/Closure Activities:
- Bear Cut Bridge & West Bridge, Rickenbacker Causeway: Project No. 20120152: Design-Build Services for the Rehabilitation of West Bridge and Bear Cut Bridge, Rickenbacker Causeway: The scope of work for this project includes the design, construction, and independent construction engineering and inspection services required to rehabilitate Bridges No. 874541 (West Bridge) and No. 874544 (Bear Cut Bridge) on the Rickenbacker Causeway and replace the existing 12-inch water main attached to the Bear Cut and West Bridges with a new 16-inch ID HDPE water main pipeline under the bay bottom installed by the Horizontal Directional Drill method. Construction is anticipated to be completed by April 26, 2014. For more information regarding this project, please visit the website at http://www.bearcutbridge.com. Mainline Closure: Vehicular traffic will be maintained on the south side of the Bear Cut Bridge. Two lanes in each direction remain open to traffic during the day; one lane is being closed in each direction from 8 pm to 6 am. The westbound right lane has been shifted to the south side of the bridge, but remains restricted to trucks, buses or trailers. The east and westbound outer lanes have been designated as sharrow lanes (lanes that are shared by cars and bicycles). A dedicated 5-1/2 ft wide pathway is available for bicycles and pedestrians traveling off-road along the north side of the bridge. The pedestrian path located on the west side underneath West Bridge is closed. Pedestrian and bike traffic is being detoured up to the Brickell Avenue/Rickenbacker Causeway intersection to use the crosswalks as needed. The three lanes that are currently closed at the West Bridge Toll Plaza will remain closed through the end of January 2014. Nightly lane closures are currently in effect at the West Bridge Toll Plaza and the West Bridge. These lane closures will begin at 8 PM and continue until 6 AM each day. Due to the close proximity of the bridge to the toll plaza, it will be necessary to close the 4th and 5th lanes in the toll plaza each night. Three toll booths will remain open during these times and 1 lane of traffic across West Bridge. Detour: Motorists are advised to follow posted maintenance of traffic (MOT) signs.
