(MIAMI, May 29, 2014) – The Miami-Dade County Public Works and Waste Management Department (PWWM) celebrated National Public Works Week May 19 through May 23, to remind County residents that these are just a few of the many infrastructure elements and services PWWM is responsible for throughout the County:
- Nearly one million traffic signs.
- More than 3,200 miles of public roads.
- Countywide waste disposal including waste-to-energy.
- Approximately 2,850 traffic signals.
- More than 200 bridges.
- Dozens of roadway improvement projects to help make streets safe and aesthetically pleasing.
- More than 675,000 tons of waste and 61,000 tons recyclable materials collected.
- Mosquito control.
- Storm drainage and canal maintenance.
National Public Works Week was established by the American Public Works Association in 1960 to create public awareness of the importance of public works in community life. “The men and women of our County’s Public Works and Waste Management Department are involved in the day-to-day work that directly impacts the quality of life in our community,” said Mayor Carlos A. Gimenez. “We join in celebrating National Public Works Week and recognizing the fine contribution of these public servants to the overall wellbeing of Miami-Dade County.”
“We’d like to use this opportunity to increase residents’ awareness of the facilities and services built, maintained and provided by the Public Works and Waste Management Department,” said Alina T. Hudak, Deputy Mayor and Interim Department Director for PWWM. “They are very critical to the County’s economy, safety, mobility and quality of life.”
The PWWM hosted a display of public works services on Wednesday, May 21 in the lobby of the Stephen P. Clark Center Building in downtown Miami, which included the unveiling of a new video highlighting the public works functions of the Department (available at http://youtu.be/o-Kil0F3gjc). PWWM employees were on hand to answer any questions residents may have regarding public works services. As part of the Department’s outreach efforts, PWWM employees frequently go out into the community to explain their work and the importance of public works services.
