Miami-Dade County to conduct aerial spraying for mosquitoes

(MIAMI, August 7, 2014) – The Miami-Dade County Public Works and Waste Management Department (PWWM) will utilize the services of a contractor to conduct mosquito control aerial spraying operations this evening.

Miami-Dade County will provide the pesticide, Dibrom (also known as Naled), which is certified for use by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the State of Florida. The aerial mosquito control flight will take place no earlier than 2 hours before sunset until 2 hours after sunrise, over Homestead, Florida City, the Redlands, and Kendall (see attached PDF map). The flight operations are weather permitting.

The purpose of this aerial spraying activity is to reduce the infestation of mosquitoes within populated areas of Miami-Dade County where mosquito counts have exceeded existing standards and the number of complaints has increased. Beekeepers are asked to keep their bees covered during the spraying operations in their particular area.  Individuals with known allergic reactions should remain indoors.
