Message from Mayor Carlos Alvarez
Miami-Dade County is looking for ways to spur the economy, create jobs and invest in our future. Everything we do is about improving the quality of life for our residents. To us, recovery and reinvestment are not just "buzz" words. They are our mantra and our creed as we work to make the best possible use of stimulus dollars, and emerge from this economic downturn better and stronger. Learn what Miami-Dade County is doing with the help of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
Economic Stimulus Money at Work in Miami-Dade
The first Miami-Dade County Public Works project, stemming from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), broke ground on Monday, October 19 with the installation of a guardrail along the canal of a Goulds neighborhood.
CDBG Recovery Funds
The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 was signed into law by President Obama on Feb. 17, 2009. The Recovery Act awards $1 billion in CDBG Recovery (CDBG-R) funds to be distributed to cities, counties, insular areas and states to carry out, on an expedited basis, eligible activities under the CDBG program. Miami-Dade County has received $ $4,884,311.

Economic Stimulus Dollars for Local Growers
A $2 million federal economic stimulus grant from the Environmental Protection Agency, is set to help Miami-Dade County growers upgrade their old diesel irrigation pump engines to new, more fuel efficient models. Growers can get reimbursed up to 65% of the cost of a new pump engine. The more efficient Tier III engines burn 2-3 gallons of fuel per hour, which is far less than older models. Growers could save about 1,000 gallons of fuel per year.

Cleaner, safer, fuel efficient vehicles through C.A.R.S
President Obama signed into law a program NHTSA is calling the Car Allowance Rebate System (CARS). This is a government program that helps you purchase a new, more fuel efficient vehicle when you trade in a less fuel efficient vehicle.

Youth Summer Employment Program
The Human Resources department has partnered with South Florida Workforce (SFW) and Miami-Dade County Public Schools (MDCPS) in their 2009 Youth Summer Employment Program to bring 691 young adults, ages 16-24, to work as interns in 45 departments across the county. The program begins on June 29, 2009, and will continue for five weeks. 131 of these positions have been designated as "green jobs". The program provides young adults with an understanding of careers, the workplace and the development of vital employment skills by linking students to employers for work experience and career exploration.
