Miami-Dade County residents and visitors are invited to Get on Board
The Miami-Dade County Department of Transportation and Public Works (DTPW) joins transit agencies across the nation in encouraging residents and visitors to join the movement and ride transit on Get on Board Day, Thursday, April 25, 2019.
Get on Board Day is a new national awareness campaign, sponsored nationwide by the American Public Transportation Association (APTA), designed to increase support for public transportation. One of the campaign’s main goals is to emphasize that public transportation is a convenient and safe travel option that also helps people save money.
According to the latest APTA Transit Savings Report, a two-person household in Miami can save nearly $9,500 annually by downsizing to one car and taking public transportation. Also according to APTA, the average household in the country spends 16 cents of every dollar on transportation, and 93% of this goes to buying, maintaining and operating cars, the largest expenditure after housing.
“Public transportation helps to connect local communities and is a cornerstone of local economies in urban and suburban areas,” said Alice N. Bravo, P.E., Director of the Miami-Dade Department of Transportation and Public Works. “Combined with first and last mile mobility options, public transportation offers a safer, more economical and more convenient way to travel through our County. I encourage everyone to get on board with Miami-Dade Transit on April 25 and all year long to help reduce congestion!”
Additionally, public transportation helps to make a community economically prosperous and competitive. Every $1 invested in public transportation generates approximately $4 in economic returns, powering community growth and revitalization.
