Miami-Dade celebrates the enduring power of community parks and recreation this July

MIAMI (June 24, 2015)

Miami-Dade residents know their parks and recreation facilities provide places to get active, explore nature and connect with fellow community members. But what they may not know is that parks and recreation also contribute to improved health outcomes, higher property values and environmental sustainability.

Parks and recreation have the power to strengthen communities, transform lives and protect the future. That’s why this year, the Miami-Dade Parks, Recreation and Open Spaces Department joins cities across the country in celebrating the power of parks and recreation for the 30th anniversary of Park and Recreation Month – an annual event created by the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) and celebrated in July since 1985.

“Miami-Dade County’s abundant park and recreation amenities are helping us to be a happier, healthier and more livable community,” said Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos A. Gimenez. “As we join the NRPA for the national celebration of Park and Recreation Month in July, I encourage residents and visitors to take time out to explore all the great things that our Parks Department has to offer.”

“There’s no need to travel far and wide to experience the great outdoors and see beautiful scenery for Park and Recreation Month. Miami-Dade County has parks, beaches and attractions county-wide that offer plenty of free or inexpensive recreational programming and activities to suit everyone’s tastes throughout July and each and every month of the year,” said Miami-Dade Parks Director Jack Kardys.

Miami-Dade Parks will host these special Park and Recreation Month offers and events in July, along with ongoing activities:
