The Parks Foundation of Miami-Dade is awarded a $3,000 Impact
Grant for Learn-To-Swim Scholarships for residents of District Eight

MIAMI (July 21, 2015)

The Parks Foundation has been awarded a $3,000 grant from the office of Commissioner Daniella Levine Cava, District 8, to support Learn-to-Swim Scholarships within the district. The grant will provide 75 children, ages two through 14, with beginner learn-to-swim and water safety lessons at Helen Sands Pool, Naranja Pool, and Goulds Pool.

“We are grateful for Commissioner Levine Cava’s commitment to ensuring that all children in District 8 have the opportunity to learn to swim,” said Parks Foundation Board President Raul Garcia. “This generous grant will help us in our mission to keep children safe by ensuring that they have access to free swim lessons.”

According to the Florida Department of Health in Miami-Dade County, drowning has been the leading cause of death among children aged one to four years, both in Florida and Miami-Dade County, and Florida leads the nation overwhelmingly with the highest unintentional drowning rate for one to four year olds.

The Parks Foundation of Miami-Dade established Learn-to-Swim Scholarships to ensure underprivileged kids have access to free learn-to-swim lessons at Miami-Dade Parks’ pools, in partnership with the Miami-Dade Drowning Prevention Coalition. Miami-Dade Parks’ Learn-to-Swim class is a two-week beginner swim lesson taught by American Red Cross-certified water safety instructors. Visit the Parks website for more information and a list of pools.
