Miami-Dade Parks honored by YMCA of South Florida with ''Visionary Award''

MIAMI (December 03, 2015)

The Miami-Dade Parks, Recreation and Open Spaces Department has been honored with the YMCA of South Florida's ''Visionary Award'' for its transformative partnership and ongoing commitment to strengthening communities through the development of sustainable programs that nurture youth development and healthy living. The award recognizes Miami-Dade Parks’ collaboration with the Y to provide the North Pointe YMCA Family Center and Youth Activity Center, a 6,590 square-foot public facility with amenities that include swimming pools, splash pads, a bath house, a gymnasium, a recreation center, a playground, a concession, and a picnic shelter.

The award was recently presented at the Y’s recent 100th Anniversary Celebration Gala at Turnberry Isle Miami Resort.  Other notable honorees included the Florida-based law firm Shutts & Bowen (Legacy Award) and The Fisher Island Philanthropic Fund (Spirit, Mind & Body Award). The event kicks off a year-long celebration, commemorating the Y’s long-time service and good work on behalf of children, families, senior, and adults in South Florida, since its founding in 1916.

Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos A. Gimenez said of the award:  “I congratulate the Y on their 100-year milestone of great service to Miami-Dade County and thank them for honoring our Parks Department, with the Visionary Award. Through its’ longtime partnership with the Y, our Parks Department has offered numerous educational programs, after-school childcare, summer camps, youth sports, and many other recreational activities throughout the community. Together they continue to improve lives of families and build a better future for our children and grandchildren.”

In operation for 86 years, Miami-Dade Parks is a world-class parks system and the third largest county park system in the United States, consisting of 269 parks and over 12,800 acres of land.
