WASD: Conserve water usage during severe rain events to alleviate over-burdening the sewer system

MIAMI (December 08, 2015)

South Florida has been inundated with rain the last few days and the Miami-Dade Water and Sewer Department (WASD) is asking residents to conserve their water usage during this wet weather.

“As roads flood, the excess water will eventually find its way to our sewer lines that end up transporting excessive amounts of water – in addition to our sewage – through our pump stations and eventually to our plants,” said WASD Director Lester Sola. “We are encouraging our customers to conserve the water they use, especially during peak early morning hours and evening hours so our sewer infrastructure isn’t overwhelmed, which could lead to a possible overflow.”

The department is also asking customers not to open sewer manhole covers during rain events because this also introduces excess water to the sewer system that can overburden the infrastructure.

It is the priority of the Miami-Dade Water and Sewer Department to provide safe, reliable service to its customers. For additional information about Department services and programs, visit
