Fall Fine Art Exhibit evening "Spirits, Spells and American Lore" at the Deering Estate
The reception for the Fall Fine Art Exhibit "Spirits, Spells and American Lore" will be held on Wednesday, October 21, 2015 from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the Deering Estate. The Exhibit Evening reception is free and open to the public. Light refreshments and a cash bar will be available. The exhibit will be on display daily, 10 am to 4 pm, from October 3 – November 20, 2015 and is free with regular Estate admission.
The exhibit complements our annual ticketed special event, Wine on Harvest Moon, held Saturday, October 24, 2015 which features the best of American regional wines and their paired culinary presentations with an elegant yet spooky flare. The exhibit weaves wines with art and literature and explores the macabre and mysterious nature of these Northwest, Mid-Atlantic and Northeast locales and lore.
Curator Kim Yantis wishes to present this group exhibition as “a thematic investigation of literary inspirations from Charles Deering’s onsite book collection” with inspirations from Washington Irving’s Sleepy Hollow, Melleville’s Moby Dick and more.
The resulting show incorporates strong imagery and text combinations from local and internationally recognized printmakers, poets, and painters. Artists include: Tom Virgin, a 2015, Knight Foundation Challenge Grant Finalist for the Letterpress Project, Kathleen Hudspeth, a 2013 Knight Foundation Grantee for Turned Based Press, Kari Snyder and Brian Reedy, and Barbara Rivera, and broadsheet and book collaborators, Michael Hettich, Mia Leonin, Campbell McGrath, Dethe Elza, Louise Erdich, Sally Jane Franson.
