Local community coming together to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s legacy through a volunteer service project at Goulds Park

MIAMI (January 13, 2016)

Hundreds of volunteers will participate in a day of service to honor the life and work of civil rights leader, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., on Saturday, January 16, 2016, at Goulds Park, 11350 SW 216 Street, Miami, FL. Miami-Dade Parks, Recreation and Open Spaces will host the event in partnership with the Parks Foundation of Miami-Dade and Miami Dolphins Specials Teams driven by Chevy.

The event begins with an opening ceremony at 9:00 a.m. featuring a brief presentation on the significance of the day’s projects. Speakers will include Miami-Dade Parks Director, Jack Kardys and other guests. The projects planned will serve as a reflection of the importance of Martin Luther King, Jr.’s legacy of community involvement, as well as inspiration for year-round volunteerism.

The Miami Dolphins Special Teams driven by Chevy will lead efforts to beautify the fitness room, learning center, and art room within the park’s active community center. The group will refurnish and paint the rooms to benefit the children of the park’s afterschool, summer camp, and disabilities services program, as well as the seniors of the active adults program. Other park enhancement projects include painting, planting, landscaping, and overall litter removal. Employees from the University of Florida/Institute of Food and Agriculture Sciences (IFAS) Miami-Dade County Extension office will educate volunteers on water conservation best practices, and lead them in assembling and painting several new rain water barrels for use in watering the park’s community garden.

“This volunteer project is a great way to start the New Year and honor Martin Luther King Jr’s legacy through service. We always look forward to this event and its ability to bring the community together to make a difference in the lives of local residents and Gould’s park patrons,” said Jack Kardys.
