Miami-Dade Safety Advocates and Nicklaus Children's Hospital promote water safety and drowning prevention at 8th Annual Summer Safety Splash

MIAMI (May 02, 2016)

May is National Water Safety Month – a time to highlight the importance of safe practices in and around the water. Drowning is the second leading cause of accidental death among children ages 1-14. Learn how to protect your child from drowning at the 8th Annual Summer Safety Splash event, 10 a.m.-1 p.m., Saturday, May 14, 2016, at Haulover Beach Park Lifeguard Headquarters Building (in front of tunnel), 10800 Collins Ave., North Miami Beach.  Presented by the Miami-Dade County Parks, Recreation and Open Spaces Department, Miami-Dade Fire Rescue and the Trauma Services Department at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital, the event is open to the public and will provide parents and children with resources on swimming lessons, water and child safety and much more. Free admission and parking. 

Activities include:

•Beach rescue and water safety demonstrations 

•Exhibitor tents - featuring swimming lessons and water/child safety

•Supervised beach fun

•Free bike helmets for kids, courtesy of Kohl’s Cares (while supplies last)

The Parks Foundation of Miami-Dade and the Swim for Jenny Memorial Fund, through the YMCA provide scholarships for free swimming lessons to underserved children.  For more information or to donate, visit www.swimforjenny.org. 

The Miami-Dade Drowning Prevention Coalition (DPC), housed under the Parks Foundation of Miami-Dade, provides a centralized resource for the coordination of information and programs related to water safety awareness, education and advocacy to reduce drowning, non-fatal drowning and other water related injuries in Miami-Dade.
