Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Gimenez takes National Wildlife Federation's "Mayors' Monarch Pledge" to help save the Monarch Butterfly

MIAMI (June 09, 2016)

In early May, Mayor Carlos Gimenez took the National Wildlife Federation's Mayors' Monarch Pledge signifying the commitment of Miami-Dade County and Miami-Dade Parks to take specific actions to help the monarch and other pollinators. This new campaign will work with mayors and local government chief executives nationwide to help save the monarch butterfly, an iconic species whose populations have declined by 90% in the last 20 years.

The Deering Estate, home to several rarely seen species of butterflies, offers Summer Butterfly Walks where guests can explore various habitats in search of Dina Yellow, Dingy Purplewing, and Atala butterflies, as well as others of the nearly 40 species that are onsite. Guided Butterfly Walks are offered on June 25, July 23, August 27 & September 24, from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm, and are free with Estate admission: $12 for adults & $7 for children (ages 4-14).

Miami-Dade County Commissioner, District 8, Daniella Levine Cava, will join guests on the July 23rd Butterfly Walk to support the Mayors' Monarch Pledge and Miami-Dade Parks commitment to create habitat and educate citizens about how they can make a difference at home.
