Miami-Dade County Parks celebrates Park and Recreation Month

Month-long celebration highlights essential value of local parks and recreation

MIAMI (June 28, 2016)

Miami-Dade Parks, Recreation & Open Spaces is celebrating Park and Recreation Month, an initiative of the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA), and all the ways parks and recreation has the power to transform our daily lives. From providing places to get fit and stay healthy to fostering new relationships and forging a connection with nature, our park and recreation facilities provide essential services and improve quality of life.

On Wednesday, July 6, beginning at 8:30 a.m., Miami-Dade Parks will join Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos A. Gimenez and the Board of County Commissioners for a special presentation at the Stephen P. Clark Center, 111 NW 1st Street in downtown Miami. The presentation will recognize our partner organizations - Wells Fargo, the UPS Foundation, Beckman Coulter and Alvarez & Marsal – as well as individual volunteers who have generously given their time and resources in support of parks. Following the presentation, the lobby of the Stephen P. Clark Center will be transformed into a Pop-Up Park with picnic benches, greenery and more, and everyone is invited to enjoy a pastelito and cafecito while experiencing the outdoors inside! The park will be on display throughout July. Bring your business card to enter the raffle prize giveaway and try your luck at winning a Parks Foundation family membership and other great prizes. The raffle will be held at 3:05 p.m. "National Park Month is a great time to celebrate the power of parks and the role parks play throughout someone’s life,” Parks Director Jack Kardys shared. “It’s also the perfect time to explore something new and rediscover the wonderful world of parks!”

Miami-Dade Parks wants everyone to get out into a park and take a selfie! From July 5-31, take a selfie illustrating your support of and love of parks using the hashtag #liveaparklife,  #SuperJuly and #SuperParkSelfie on social media. Share your photos on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram using #liveaparklife, #SuperJuly and #SuperParkSelfie. For a complete list of events to celebrate National Park and Recreatin Month, visit
