Associated Swimming Pool Industries of Florida (ASPI) donated $16,000 to the Parks Foundation of Miami-Dade for Learn-to-Swim scholarships. Over the past five years, more than 3,000 children have received scholarships for learn-to-swim beginner lessons at pools in Miami-Dade Parks.
Nationally, drowning is the second-leading cause of injury-related death among children ages one to 14. Florida has the second-highest number of drowning incidents in the U.S. and Miami-Dade County leads the state in drowning deaths with an average of 45 a year.
“We at Custom Pools have been advocates at the local and state level for safety in and around the water,” said Marilyn Schwitzer. “We believe that the first step in water safety is to know how to swim. We are glad to partner with the Parks Foundation of Miami-Dade in providing scholarships to families in need.”
“We are pleased to receive a gift of $16,000 from Associated Swimming Pool Industries of Florida to be used to provide swimming scholarships at 14 Miami-Dade County pools,” said Raul A. Garcia. “We rely on partners and generous donors like Custom Pools and ASPI to sustain crucial programs like learn-to-swim and make it affordable to the public.”
A donation of $60 sponsors one* child, and a donation of $600 sponsors up to 10* children (*number of swim lessons based on Miami-Dade County pool fees). All donations are tax deductible as allowable by law.
