Community Action and Human Services Department receives NACo award for innovative domestic violence program

MIAMI (July 15, 2016)

Miami-Dade County Community Action and Human Services Department (CAHSD) is the proud recipient of a National Association of Counties (NACo) 2016 Achievement Award for its Transforming Our Youth (TOY) program, an anti-violence program for youth who enter into the juvenile criminal justice system due to domestic violence.

In response to a need identified by the Juvenile Services Department (JSD), CAHSD, through its Coordinated Victims Assistance Center (CVAC), developed and implemented the TOY curriculum to educate youth ages 13 to 17 on the dynamics of domestic violence, to transform their understanding of it and its consequences, and to engage them in community activities and projects that strengthen their ability to behave in a non-violent manner.  The program also has an educational component for parents.

TOY is taught on a trimestral basis with four sessions once a week from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Since its inception, 59 youth have graduated from the program.
