$48,000 in scholarships awarded to 32 college and college-bound students
Miami-Dade County Community Action and Human Services Department (CAHSD) hosted its 8th Annual Scholarship Awards Luncheon earlier this month, celebrating 32 scholarship recipients. A total of $48,000 was awarded to college and college-bound students who reside in underserved communities throughout Miami-Dade County, represented by each of the department’s 16 Community Advisory Committees (CACs).
Each year, the CACs raise funds from local leaders and businesses to support scholarships for students residing in their target areas. Federal funds, through the Community Services Block Grant, supplement the monies raised by the CACs. This year, due to an increase in fundraising, many students also received laptops.
“Affording our youth the opportunity to achieve their educational aspirations is one of the main goals our CACs set out to accomplish each year,” said CAHSD Director Lucia Davis-Raiford. “We are so thrilled that year after year they support students, who otherwise may be unable to afford a college education.”
The event featured inspirational words from CAHSD Family and Community Services staff and a keynote address by Dr. Paul Kleponis. For more information on the Scholarship Program and how you can become involved in your local CAC, contact Alton V. Sears at 786-469-4648 or [email protected]
