Free Healthy Choices Clinics by Walgreens returning to Miami-Dade parks

Activity presented as part of Miami-Dade Parks' Active Older Adults program for residents, ages 55+

MIAMI (August 30, 2016)

While older adults are at greater risk of developing chronic diseases such as heart disease and cancer, than younger adults,  the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that, older adults take advantage of regular health screenings and immunizations which can be  life-saving.

The Miami-Dade Parks, Recreation and Open Spaces Department, through its partnership with Walgreens, brings back the popular health-fair-style “Healthy Choices Clinics,” designed to make health and wellness a priority. Leveraging the familiarity, convenience and accessibility of Miami-Dade Parks, Walgreens will host clinics on select days throughout September, October and November 2016 at various Miami-Dade Parks’ Active Older Adults Recreation Hubs, offering ‘free’ blood pressure checks and ‘free’ flu shots. Pneumonia and tetanus shots will also be administered, based upon insurance coverage. Attendees are advised to bring along their insurance card. In addition, a registered pharmacist will be available to answer questions regarding medications.

Please see schedule* (at the bottom of this press release) for clinic days.  Dates may be subject to change. For more information, contact the program coordinator, Allan Tavss at tavssa@miamidade.gov or 786-372-9701 and visit Miami-Dade Parks’ Active Older Adults program web page.

This series is part of Miami-Dade Parks’ ongoing community health and wellness initiative that also include its nationally acclaimed Fit2Play™, a fully-supervised after-school program with evidence-based activities focused on fitness, nutrition and wellness; the new Fit2Lead after-school program aimed at empowering at-risk youth through sports and recreation Fitness Zones® areas, free outdoor gyms, comprised of exercise equipment permanently placed in a park making it easier for people, ages 14 and above, to include a fitness regimen in their daily routine; and the Active Older Adults program that targets active adults over age 55, with partner support from the Health Foundation of South Florida (HFSF), Alliance for Aging, Baptist Health Services, local health care providers and government/social services in presenting health and wellness fairs at its various locations.

Throughout the year, Miami-Dade Parks’ Active Older Adults program offers a variety of “fee-free” recreational opportunities that include learning about healthy eating, exercising and enjoying nature, improving their physical strength and expanding their social circles as they participate in Tai Chi, Zumba Gold, a walking program, sewing, ceramics, adaptive aquatics, yoga, tennis, water exercises, field trips, and so much more.
