Nu Deco Ensemble takes over Miami-Dade Transit's Metrorail audio system

MIAMI (September 08, 2016)

The familiar tones that alert passengers of the approaching train at Miami-Dade County’s Metrorail stations are about to be taken over.

Prism Creative Group, in collaboration with The New Tropic, commissioned musical group Nu Deco Ensemble to reimagine Project Trio’s 2012 song “Raga Raja.” The 21st Century orchestra transformed a few notes from their collaboration with Project Trio last Spring that will play over the loudspeakers at certain stations throughout the County.

Riders can hear a piece of the new track when their train approaches at the following stations: Dadeland South, Brickell, Earlington Heights, and Palmetto.

“By adding some local flare to the music that plays over the loudspeakers at some of our stations, we hope to make the commute for our riders that much more enjoyable,” said Alice N. Bravo, P.E., Director of Miami-Dade County’s Department of Transportation and Public Works (DTPW). “We want to encourage our passengers to relax and enjoy the ride, and that all starts at our platforms.”

The station audio takeover is part of the partnership between DTPW and The New Tropic announced this summer.

Nu Deco is a nonprofit organization founded in 2013 that is sponsored by the Knight Foundation and the Miami Light Project. The ensemble works with local musicians, composers, DJs, dancers, and visual and media artists in order to create a unique musical experience.

“Nu Deco Ensemble is excited to be collaborating with Miami-Dade Transit,” said Sam Hyken, co-founder and composer of Nu Deco. “We are honored that our brand of music-making could be a part of Miami-Dade County residents’ daily commute. The new initiatives that the transit department has set forth are incredibly forward-thinking and we knew enriching the transit experience by connecting to art would celebrate this groundbreaking achievement for our city.”

Prism Creative Group will also be hosting the Sounds From the Underground event, taking place on Thursday, September 29, where the winning designs from the Transit Loves the Arts contest will be revealed. Latin Grammy nominated band Locos Por Juana is slated to perform. For more information on the secret location and the full list of performers, visit bit.ly/SoundsFromTheUnderground_MDT.
