Water sample solicitations not affiliated with Miami-Dade Water and Sewer Department
The communities of Westchester, Shenandoah and the Roads area are the latest communities that may have recently received packages or notices offering free water testing, but this request is not on behalf of the Miami-Dade Water and Sewer Department (WASD). When you call the number listed on the notice, a person offers to test your water for solids and chemicals.
In previous instances, these flyers are used in an attempt for companies to sell residents water softening or special filtration systems.
“I cannot emphasize enough that the drinking water WASD provides to our nearly 2.3 million residents and visitors daily is not only safe to drink, but continuously meets or exceeds all federal, state and local drinking water standards,” said WASD Director Lester Sola. “We test our water more than 210,000 times a year throughout the treatment process and that includes first acquiring the water from the wells.”
WASD and Miami-Dade County have stringent requirements in place that limit the types of industry that can operate near the well fields in order to limit the possibility of contamination. The department is also mandated by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to test the water on an annual basis for many elements and compounds and WASD provides that information in the Consumer Confidence Report (CCR), which is available to all residents and customers. The CCR also lists the phone numbers to the labs should you need to request that your water be tested.
“WASD also staffs laboratories at our treatment plants and residents can always call and request their water to be tested in cases where water quality is a concern,” said Sola. “We adhere to rigorous scientific procedures at our labs where quality assurance is practiced. In the case of these water testing sample packets left at homes, there is no way to guarantee a proper chain of custody. This leaves many questions as to the veracity of whatever results they would draw from provided samples.”
