Vizcaya celebrates International Museum Day on May 18
The worldwide community of museums celebrates International Museum Day on and around May 18, 2017 around the theme Museums and contested histories: Saying the unspeakable in museums.
This theme focuses on the role of museums that, by working to benefit society, become hubs for promoting peaceful relationships between people. The acceptance of a contested history is the first step in envisioning a shared future under the banner of reconciliation.
Saying the unspeakable in museums looks at how to understand the incomprehensible aspects of the contested histories inherent to the human race. It also encourages museums to play an active role in peacefully addressing traumatic histories through mediation and multiple points of view.
Vizcaya is also bringing together six museums across Miami to discuss an issue that faces nearly all historic and cultural institutions: how do we present a contested past in the context of a challenging present? International Museum Day Forum: Museums and Contested Histories will be held at Vizcaya Village at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 18, 2017. Vizcaya will be joined by the Wolfsonian, the Lowe Art Museum, the Bass Museum, Perez Art Museum Miami and the Institute of Contemporary Art. The forum requires pre-registration and space is limited. Register at vizcaya.eventbrite.com.
Vizcaya Museum and Gardens is open to visitors daily from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., except Tuesdays, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. To learn more about Vizcaya visit vizcaya.org or engage on social media.
