Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Gimenez, Chairman Esteban Bovo, and Vice Chairwoman Audrey Edmonson host the groundbreaking ceremony for the new Liberty Square Rising development

MIAMI (May 15, 2017)

Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos A. Gimenez, Board of County Commissioner (BCC) Chairman Esteban Bovo, and BCC Vice Chairwoman Audrey M. Edmonson will host the groundbreaking ceremony for Liberty Square Rising, a public housing community located in the Liberty City neighborhood in the City of Miami.

Liberty Square is one of the oldest public housing communities in the southeastern United States having been completed in the late 1930’s. The redevelopment plan is to demolish all existing 709 public housing units and replace with a mix of over 1,400 new units that will include public housing, affordable housing, market rate, and homeownership units. Community, education, and healthcare facilities, as well as retail stores and a major grocery store, will also be a part of the new development. The Liberty Square redevelopment represents over $307 million in new investment from Miami-Dade County and its partners. All current Liberty Square households will be able to remain on the property during construction and return to a new unit once the redevelopment is complete. The project will be built in phases. Liberty Square Rising, which will be the largest redevelopment project in Miami-Dade County history, will be transformational for public housing residents and the community as a whole.
