Deering Estate Artists-in-Residence Home Eleven competing in ArtPrize, Grand Rapids, Michigan
Current Deering Estate Artists-in-Residence Home Eleven will compete in the annual international art competition, ArtPrize, in Grand Rapids, Michigan this fall. With their interactive exhibit, Sticks and Stones Walk, the local art team seeks to pose questions of individuality, duality, and prejudice.
Sticks and Stones Walk is an interactive installation of bricks, wood, plexiglass, and foam tubes. Viewers enter into the piece and can choose to stay in an enclosure or push the foam tubes, simultaneously expanding their space while removing space from the adjacent enclosure. Walking into the structure wraps the viewer in shadows that are reminiscent of prejudice, and jockeying for space raises issues of the friction inherent in the social arena.
After the ArtPrize competition is complete, the installation will be moved to the Deering Estate as part of Home Eleven’s Artist-in-Residence project.
Home Eleven is an artistic partnership between Nelly Bonilla and Oscar Luna. Both graduates of the Pratt Institute, they began to work together in 2015 integrating different aspects of architecture, art, design, and film to promote change, challenge the status quo, and evoke a dialogue on current issues.
