Biscayne Bay Drift Card Study collaboration shares results at family-friendly event on Sunday, August 13

MIAMI (August 01, 2017)

Vizcaya Museum and Gardens will host an afternoon of "trash-talk" where the estate will be flooded with activities that showcase the year-long Biscayne Bay Drift Card Study at the community event, The Bay Drift Project: Art, Science and Trash, on Sunday, August 13 from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m.

Last year, Vizcaya and Frost Science partnered with University of Miami's Consortium for Advanced Research on Transport of Hydrocarbon in the Environment (CARTHE) scientists to design a citizen-science experiment that could help identify where the trash that washes up along the museum's shoreline originates. Beginning in September 2016, drift cards were deployed by scientists, students, families and members of the local community in eight locations across northern Biscayne Bay near the downtown Miami area. These drift cards moved along the water's currents and upon washing ashore, members of the public called in to report the card’s tracking code and location where they found it. University of Miami Rosenstiel School of Marine & Atmospheric Science is developing a model using the drift card data to better understand how debris moves with the current which will help develop solutions to decrease trash and debris in Biscayne Bay and along the shoreline.

The Bay Drift Project: Art, Science and Trash will bring the community together at Vizcaya to enjoy family-friendly activities that showcase what was learned, what the collaboration hopes to discover in the next year of the study, make art for the sake of science and enjoy hands-on experiments. Attendees must arrive no later than 4:00 p.m. for admission to the event.

Tickets are $6 for children (age 6-12 years), $18 for adults, and free for children under the age of 5 and can be purchased online at https://projectbaydrift.eventbrite.com and include admission to Vizcaya Museum and Gardens. Admission to Vizcaya and to the event is free for Vizcaya Members.

Vizcaya is located at 3251 South Miami Avenue, Miami, FL 33129.
