ALERT: Payment for Section 8 Voucher Scam
Miami-Dade County’s Housing Choice Voucher Program has become aware of a fraudulent scheme where people are being offered Section 8 housing vouchers for a fee of $500.
If such an offer is made to you, do not respond. This is a scam. Section 8 vouchers are never provided for a fee.
One example of the scam (and there are variations):
People call using false names but real phone numbers, such as Diane Arango or Diane Ortega at 305-305-5053 or Carmen Alvarez or Caridad Alvarez at 850-203-3274. The caller tells the person who is the target of the scam, that they have been selected for receipt of a Section 8 housing voucher entitling them to a 2 or 3 bedroom apartment.
To get the voucher, the caller says that all that needs to be done is to provide personal information such as a valid social security number and payment of a $500 fee.
The fee is paid through CashApp or Velle, and information of where and when to pick up the “voucher” is not given until payment is made.
Again, any such offer is not valid. The person making the offer is committing a crime.
