Fencing isn't your average sport and Joaquin Maximo Tack-Fang is no ordinary fencing instructor. The Miami-Dade Park and Recreation Department employee and former Olympian uses his talent and remarkable skills to teach the sport to children, adults and seniors at parks throughout the County.
"Fencing is in my blood. It's a big part of my life," says Tack-Fang.
Tack-Fang has been with Miami- Dade Parks since the fencing program was created in 2001 and has been overseeing its development ever since. His credentials are impressive. He competed in the 1968 Olympics in Mexico. A former World and Pan American Games champion, Tack-Fang is certified by the United States Fencing Coaching Association.
"The Miami-Dade Park and Recreation Department is extremely proud to have such an individual as one of its own," says Director Jack Kardys.
He adds, "Tack-Fang brings dignity, pride, commitment, dedication, high work ethics, unwavering principles, selflessness and a desire to make a difference in our community."
Joaquin Maximo Tack-Fang uses fencing to teach children of all abilities the value of perseverance.
