World Trade Month
In May, South Florida will join with other areas across the U.S. to mark World Trade Month. World Trade Center Miami, the Florida Chamber of Commerce and Enterprise Florida have joined together to create dozens of activities for this annual event that promotes awareness about the importance of international trade as a major contributor to job creation and corporate growth in Florida.

MSC to Cruise
From Miami Year Round
MSC Cruises, the upscale Italian line, will begin sailing year-round from PortMiami when the  MSC Divina arrives in November. It will be the first time the ship, whose godmother is none other than Sophia Loren, sails from a North American port.

Around the World
PortMiami Business Development officials recently participated in a series of international trade shows in Sao Paolo, Hong Kong and Guatemala, promoting PortMiami as Cargo Gateway of the Americas and the $2 billion in infrastructure improvements currently underway. 

President Obama: Port Tunnel Model for Nation

President Obama Speaking

President Obama promoted the benefits of transportation infrastructure improvements during his visit last month to PortMiami. After touring the Port tunnel, now under construction, the President cited the project as an excellent example of effective public-private partnerships that could serve as a national model. The digging phase of the tunnel construction is nearly complete with the project on schedule for a spring 2014 finish.

Dredge on Target for Summer Start
Aerial photography of Deep Dredge project The construction phase of the Port's Deep Dredge project is on target for a summer start-up. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is expected to award a contract in May. Environmental surveys are scheduled to begin this summer, followed by the dredging of the Port's channel to -50/52 feet. The Deep Dredge is scheduled for a 2015 completion, in sync with the opening of the expanded Panama Canal. PortMiami will be the only port south of Norfolk, Virginia at the necessary depth to welcome fully loaded cargo container ships when they begin traversing the Panama Canal in 2015.

National Honors for PortMiami's Master Plan
PortMiami after darkPortMiami’s 2035 Master Plan has earned a National Recognition Award from the American Council of Engineering Companies as part of the organization’s Engineering Excellence Awards. The competition honors projects that demonstrate exceptional achievement in engineering. The Master Plan was created for PortMiami by Bermello, Ajamil & Partners, an international, multidisciplinary design firm that provides planning, design, and engineering services.

Coming Soon – World's Top Cargo Conference
TOC AmericasPortMiami is honored to be hosting this year's TOC Americas event from October 1-3 as a prelude to the opening of the expanded Panama Canal in 2015. TOC CSC Americas 2013 will bring together all container supply chain business communities to discuss the opportunities that lie ahead for shippers, carriers and ports. Attendees will also identify what challenges the business may face throughout the Canal expansion project and what solutions can be offered for the future.

Employee and Bill at holiday luncheonPortMiami has received the Firm of the Year Award from the Florida Customs Brokers and Forwarders Association which seeks to expand Florida's trading communities at the local, state, and national levels. "PortMiami is honored by this recognition," said Bill Johnson, Port Director. "This award underscores PortMiami's growing stature and our commitment to growth."
