Motor Vehicle Titles & Registrations

A certificate of title is the proof of ownership to a motor vehicle in the state of Florida.

When you purchase a new motor vehicle, bring a motor vehicle into the state, or at any time the ownership of the motor vehicle changes, you must transfer ownership into your name.

Motor vehicles, vessels, mobile homes and trailers are issued registrations to prove that license taxes and fees for the current registration period have been paid.

Registrations may consist of a license plate, a decal, and a registration certificate and are to remain with the registered owner.

If you are moving to Florida, you must register your vehicle in Florida within 10 days of establishing residency.

Missing your online Vehicle Registration Renewal?
If it has been at least 20 days since the online renewal of your Miami-Dade County’s vehicle registration was completed, and you have not received it, please call the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles at 850-617-2000 to see if the registration may have been returned.

If the registration was not returned and has been lost in transit, a replacement registration/decal can be issued at no additional cost.

You can also obtain your no-fee replacement decal and/or registration at the Tax Collector’s Auto Tag Public Service Office.

If you cannot come to our office and it has been 20 days since the online transaction, you can email the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles to request a no-fee replacement decal and/or registration, or follow other instructions.
