Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
Welcome to the Miami-Dade County Information Technology Department's Geographic Information Systems (GIS), where residents and visitors can find information about the County's GIS developments and activities.
A Geographic Information System (GIS) is a computer system that provides tools to store, edit, display and query data containing locational information, such as address, folio, census tract, Zip Code or x, y coordinates.
History of GIS
In 1986, Miami-Dade County commenced the development and implementation of a Geographic Information Systems (GIS). This effort was coordinated by the County’s Information Technology Department (ITD.)
The Information Technology Department (ITD) through its GIS Division, maintains a central repository of production geographic data available to all Miami-Dade County departments.
Metadata is essentially “data about data”. It provides vital information such as the how, what, when, where, why, etc. of data to users and future data maintainers.
GIS Services include data download, data subscriptions, maps data creation, spatial analysis software development and consulting to County departments, governmental agencies, businesses and citizens.
GIS Users Group
The GIS Users Group is a forum for introducing new technology and processes to the GIS User Community. It allows developers and users to discuss the status of current GIS projects, enterprise-wide as well as departmental. Additionally, it provides a vehicle to coordinate issues of common concern, encourage data sharing, promote training opportunities, and present information on current events.Back to Top Page Last Edited: Thu Jul 30, 2015 3:38:05 PM
