Miami-Dade Transit Introduces New Herencia Hispana (Hispanic Heritage) Tours

Kickoff celebration Sept. 29th

(Miami-Dade County, FL) --
Miami-Dade Transit kicks off Hispanic Heritage month with brand new Herencia Hispana (Hispanic Heritage) tours.

In this the sixth year of the tours, Miami-Dade Transit teamed up with prominent Miami historian Dr. Paul George to bring the community more in-depth narratives and additional historic sites. Included this year are neighborhoods in Little Havana, downtown Miami, and the Orange Bowl area. The last stop will be a street fair at the Latin Quarter in Little Havana.

Each Saturday starting Oct. 7th, MDT will offer a unique view of the area’s rich Hispanic history through the free tours narrated in English and Spanish. Full-size, comfortable buses leave downtown Miami, taking participants to streets, buildings, and monuments that stand as symbols of Miami-Dade’s Hispanic past.

Tours leave the Stephen P. Clark Center, 111 NW First St. in downtown Miami, at 9 a.m., 9:30 a.m., and 10 a.m. and last about four hours. Reservations are required. For more information on the tours, or to reserve a seat, call 305-884-7567, Monday through Thursday, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Participants must specify whether they want the tour narrated in English or in Spanish.

Miami-Dade County officials and MDT staff will hold a kickoff celebration Friday, Sept. 29, 2006, at the Latin Quarter Cultural Center, 1501 SW Eighth St., from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Refreshments and tapas will be served. The public and media are invited to attend. To reserve for this event, call 305-375-4935.
