Environmental Policy
Miami-Dade Transit's (MDT) overall environmental policy provides a roadmap for the Department to improve and protect the environment and the health and safety of our employees, customers and the general public. The Department is committed to achieving its environmental goals by utilizing sound environmental management practices. These include :
- Exceeding compliance with all applicable local, state, and federal environmental regulations through best management practices;
- Establishing waste minimization and pollution prevention programs to prevent or reduce impacts to the environment;
- Establishing management systems and controls for environmental compliance assurance and risk/liability management;
- Streamlining operations and management systems by periodically evaluating the achievement of targeted environmental objectives; and,
- Providing continuous training and communicating environmental policies and programs to employees.
Miami-Dade Transit is committed to implementing pollution prevention programs and continually improving environmental performance to minimize environmental issues. Our Environmental Policy is available to both employees and the general public.

Hybrid Buses
Taking public transportation is one of the most environmentally friendly things you can do. By taking cars off the road, Miami-Dade Transit cuts down on smog and greenhouse gas emissions that cause global warming. Those benefits will increase over the next few years as MDT transitions its fleet to cleaner-burning, more fuel-efficient hybrid buses.
In addition, MDT is testing the use of biodiesel in its buses, which further reduces greenhouse gas emissions that cause global warming by decreasing the use of fossil fuels. Miami-Dade Transit will be acquiring a number of 60-foot hybrid electric buses like this one for operation on the new I-95 express lanes and elsewhere. Hybrid electric technology is significantly more fuel efficient than conventional diesel buses and will result in a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.
Miami-Dade Transit also is helping the environment with its 900-plus bus shelters, which utilize solar-powered lighting, and an extremely bike-friendly system that allows patrons to bring their bikes with them when they ride. And MDT participates annually in national celebrations of Dump the Pump Day, which promotes the environmental and other benefits of public transportation.
