Transit Joins Traffic at 511
Thanks to Florida Department of Transportation funding, a transit component is planned for the 511 traffic information system. Access to Miami-Dade Transit route and schedule information via a telephone voice recognition system is among the features 511 callers will enjoy 24 hours a day. Broward County Transit, Palm Tran Palm Beach County, and Tri-Rail route and schedule information will also be available.
The FDOT project also features a new automated trip-planning program that will eliminate MDT’s dependence on the current manual system. Accessing schedules and maps of other South Florida transit agencies through 511, MDT information agents can prepare quick and easy point-to-point tri-county travel itineraries for transit users. MDT with other participating agencies also receives an upgraded customer feedback and processing system for better handling and tracking of service complaints, commendations, and suggestions.
The MDT call center will also undergo an upgrade to prepare for the 511 Transit debut. MDT customers can now access enhanced 24-hour telephone features: special event information, pass sales outlet locations, maps-by-mail requests, and general service information. Additional phone lines and equipment assure that the phone system can adequately handle and route the expected increase in the volume of callers. Access to MDT call center self-help options get another boost in 2005. At present, MDT responds every month to between 1,200 and 1,700 requests for trip planning via e-mail.
In 2005, the MDT website will offer automated point-to-point trip planning.
