Sound like a pipedream? Not for people like Ashley Alfred of Pembroke Pines.

SIGN OF THE TIMES: Miami-Dade County Public Works crews are working overtime to replace traffic signs that were damaged or destroyed during Hurricane Wilma. The People's Transportation Plan calls for the ongoing replacement of faded street name signs throughout the county, but the Public Works Department's priorities shifted to regulatory signs after Wilma. Once the replacement of all regulatory signs such as stop signs is completed in early to mid-April, crews will resume replacing street name signs. Regulatory sign replacement is being paid for with a combination of Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and Federal Highway Administration grants and Public Works Department general funds.

Popular Transit Benefit Is Winning Over More Commuters

Imagine working in downtown Miami and never having to worry about battling rush-hour traffic or paying for parking, all while saving money on your taxes.

Sound like a pipedream? Not for people like Ashley Alfred of Pembroke Pines.

Alfred, who works as a paymaster at the Hotel Intercontinental next to Bayfront Park, takes advantage of Miami-Dade Transit's Corporate Metropass Incentive Program to save money and avoid stress on his daily commute.

Alfred parks at the Palmetto Metrorail station every morning and takes Metrorail and Metromover to work. Thanks to an employee group discount and a partial subsidy from his employer, he pays only $45 for his monthly transit pass and Metrorail parking permit - and it's all tax-free.

GETTING TO WORK: Employee group discounts and pre-tax savings are helping make transit an attractive choice for thousands of workers in the county.

"It's great. It saves me on gas, mileage and parking and the hassle of dealing with traffic," he said. "If I was to park downtown, it would be about $100, plus the gas."

The Corporate Metropass Incentive Program is letting thousands of workers like Alfred enjoy cheaper, less stressful commutes by offering group discounts and pre-tax savings to those who purchase the monthly Metropass through their employer.

Groups of five to 99 employees can save $7.50 off the regular $75 Metropass, which is good for unlimited rides all month on Metrobus and Metrorail, while groups of 100 or more save $10. The monthly payroll deduction, which is also available for the $6.25 Metrorail parking permit, saves employees even more on their taxes.

"It's a great employee relations tool, and it's a great benefit for employees," said Leonie Timothee, human resources manager at the Intercontinental, where about 150 employees - from room attendants to stewards to managers - benefit from the program. "It's also good for us as an employer because we know employees have a way of getting to work."

Miami-Dade Transit's sales of the Metropass through the Corporate Metropass Incentive Program have doubled since 2002. About 7,400 employees at more than 120 businesses and institutions now take advantage of the program.

Miami-Dade Transit staff maintains a busy schedule of corporate outreach presentations. High gas prices and significant improvements in the transit system over the last three years also have helped spark interest in the program. Enhancements under the People's Transportation Plan, funded by the half-penny tax approved by voters in 2002, include 25 new bus routes and rush-hour service of every 30 minutes or better on all routes, as well as extended Metrorail rush-hour service and no-cost Metromover service.

"More employers are participating in the Corporate Metropass Incentive Program all the time because they know it's an excellent recruitment and retention tool. And now that Miami-Dade Transit service is more convenient than ever, there's never been a better time for employees to take advantage of this great bargain," said Miami-Dade Transit Director Roosevelt Bradley.

At the University of Miami's School of Medicine, with easy access to the Civic Center Metrorail station, the Metropass isn't just convenient, it's a virtual necessity for the school's employees, said Martha Gonzalez, the school's office manager.

"The main parking garage has a three-year waiting list," Gonzalez said.

If the school didn't offer the Corporate Metropass Incentive Program benefit, she added, "employees would riot."

SAIL AWAY: Aventura's refurbished shuttle bus service features a new route and expanded schedule.
Aventura Express Rolls Out New Design,
Better Service

Aventura's municipal shuttle bus service has a new route, new look and new name.

The Aventura Express, formerly known as the Aventura Advantage, has introduced a new fifth route and beefed up its schedule to provide greater frequency and extended hours of operation. The fleet's revamped design features a colorful sailboat emblem, the new "Express Yourself!" logo, and a bright yellow, blue, green, red or purple wave for easy route identification.

The new Purple Route will provide better service to the area south of the William Lehman Causeway east of Biscayne Boulevard.

Aventura's complimentary shuttle bus service, which connects to Miami-Dade Transit and Broward County Transit buses at Aventura Mall, began in 1999 and is partially funded by the People's Transportation Plan half-penny tax, which supports several other locally run municipal transit services including the Coral Gables Trolley.

Last year, Aventura's shuttle buses transported more than 100,000 passengers to such destinations as grocery stores, shopping centers and medical facilities.

The buses are equipped with bike racks and wheelchair lifts.

Regional Transit Trip Planner Is Online

Do you ever use MapQuest to plan a trip in your car? Don't you wish there were a MapQuest for public transportation in South Florida?

Wish no more.

Automated regional transit trip planning is available online at Go.miamidade.gov.

Just click the "Trip Planner" link in the upper right-hand corner of the screen, then punch in your starting point, destination and desired time of travel to get instant detailed trip planning information using Miami-Dade Transit, Tri-Rail, Broward County Transit, Palm Tran, or any combination of the four. The software works with addresses as well as landmarks. You can even plan a trip from Homestead all the way to West Palm Beach!

GETTING THERE: New software provides instant trip planning information using public transportation in South Florida.

The trip planner generates a detailed itinerary that includes transfer points, trip duration and cost. In cases where there's more than one way of getting there, you can sort travel options by trip duration, number of transfers or total walking distance between transfers.

"The Regional Transit Trip Planner is making public transportation in South Florida more user-friendly than ever," said Miami-Dade Transit Director Roosevelt Bradley. "It's showing people that taking transit is much easier than they may have thought, not to mention a lot cheaper and less stressful than driving."

The South Florida Regional Transit Trip Planner is the first regional online transit trip planning system in the United States. Funded by the Florida Department of Transportation, it was implemented through a partnership between Miami-Dade Transit, Broward County Transit, Palm Tran, the South Florida Regional Transportation Authority/Tri-Rail and South Florida Commuter Services.
