Miami-Dade Transit Honors Civil Rights Icon Rosa Parks

Miami-Dade County elected officials, Metrobus operators, and other Transit staff joined residents on Monday, July 17, to dedicate the Central Transportation Building to Rosa Parks, Mother of the Civil Rights Movement. Rosa Parks' refusal to give up her seat to a white male passenger on a Montgomery, Alabama bus in December 1955 awoke America to the injustice of Jim Crow segregation laws.

"She was not a wealthy woman, she was not a public figure, and she did not earn a Grammy award, but she did help to change the laws of this nation during an important era in American history," said Commissioner Dorrin Rolle, District 2. "The mother of the modern-day Civil Rights Movement rightly deserves this honor, and it is appropriate that a transit facility such as this one carry her name."

Miami-Dade Transit's 15,000-square-foot Central Transportation Building, located at 3300 NW 33 Avenue, is now adorned with a beautiful bronze plaque depicting the late civil rights icon Rosa Parks.

HONORING ROSA PARKS: Pictured at Transit building dedication, from left, Rev. Carl Johnson, 93rd Street Baptist; Miami-Dade Comm. Dennis Moss; Miami-Dade Comm. Katy Sorenson; Cong. Carrie P. Meek (ret.); Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Alvarez; Parks' grandnephew Nicholas McCauley; Miami-Dade Comm. Dorrin Rolle; Parks' nephew William McCauley and wife Sonia to his right; Transit Director Roosevelt Bradley; and King Institute Exec. Dir. John T. Jones Jr.

The inscription on the plaque reads as follows: "To honor the Mother of the American Civil Rights Movement for her internationally recognized leadership, vision, and pioneering efforts, this building is dedicated as the Rosa Parks Transportation Building."

The Miami-Dade Board of County Commissioners unanimously approved the renaming of the transit facility earlier this year as a tribute to Parks' historical contribution to the Civil Rights Movement and her leadership in making public transportation accessible to all.

Parks' subsequent arrest and trial for this act of civil disobedience triggered the Montgomery Bus Boycott, one of the largest and most successful mass movements against racial segregation in American history.

The civil rights pioneer's courageous actions not only earned her an iconic status in American culture but left an enduring legacy for civil rights movements worldwide.

"We are deeply honored and proud to posthumously dedicate one of our transit facilities in memory of Rosa Parks," said Miami-Dade Transit Director Roosevelt Bradley. "She understood the role of every individual citizen in a democracy."

Busway Extension In Homestead Gets A Boost

The City of Homestead is taking big steps in using People's Transportation Plan funds to add premium improvements where the South Miami-Dade Busway crosses through Homestead's central business district.

Along with the South Miami-Dade Busway extension, some of the enhancements that are taking place in the City of Homestead consist of corral fencing, trendy street lighting, and new bus shelters designs that will use the old Florida East Coast Railroad Train Station (FEC) as the basis for the enhancement project.

Improvements throughout the city started in October 2005 and they're expected to finish a year from now.

Miami-Dade Transit Adds Hybrid Buses to Its Fleet

In the midst of the nation's skyrocketing gas prices and the increasing interest in cleaner air and reduced emissions, Miami-Dade Transit remains strong as it prepares to add hybrid buses to the Metrobus fleet.

Miami-Dade County officials and transportation leaders were joined by reporters at a press conference held on July 20th for the unveiling of Transit's first two diesel-electric hybrid buses. The addition of the hybrid buses is part of a nationwide effort by transit agencies to move towards more fuel-efficient technologies.

The 60-foot long articulated model on loan from North American Bus Industries Inc. and a 42-foot New Flyer model on loan from the GM/Allison hybrid engine manufacturer, were both presented at the conference. The 60- foot long articulated model is already operating on the South Miami-Dade Busway.

ALL ABOARD THE ELECTRIC BUS: New hybrid buses offer large gains in fuel saving and reduced emissions.

Passenger cars and transit buses with diesel-electric hybrid systems have been generating a tremendous amount of publicity lately, due to the technology's fuel savings and reduced emissions.

Based on research done by other transit agencies using the hybrid system, Miami-Dade Transit Deputy Director of Operations Harpal Kapoor estimates that MDT will reduce its fuel consumption by at least 25 percent with diesel-electric engines.

Another great advantage of this new technology is that the GM hybrid buses produce much lower hydrocarbon and carbon monoxide emissions than conventional diesel-powered buses.

Miami-Dade Transit plans to purchase 39 of the 60-foot hybrids by 2008, and 180 of the 42-foot model between 2009 and 2012, as part of its route fleet replacement program.
