From left, standing, are CITT members Rodney Sanders, Jorge Rodriguez-Chomat, Anna Ward, Linda Zilber, Angelberto DeCoro and CITT Vice-Chairman Harold Braynon Jr. The CITT, which was created to oversee the half-penny tax that funds the People's Transportation Plan, now enjoys a full complement of 15 members.

To Our Readers

Roosevelt Bradley
Miami-Dade Transit Director

As we ring in yet another new year at Miami-Dade Transit, I'd like to take this opportunity to reflect on our accomplishments of the past year.

Among the highlights: a five-mile extension of the South Dade Busway, seven new bus routes, 8,000 additional miles of daily bus service, 84 new buses, three new Park & Rides and expanded Metrorail rush hour service.

We also improved our web-based transit services by introducing online transit pass sales and an automated regional transit trip planner, and we made significant progress toward securing federal matching funds that will enable us to double the Metrorail system over the next nine years under the People's Transportation Plan (PTP).

These important achievements are all the more remarkable considering the fact that we had to contend with two hurricanes, a sharp rise in fuel prices and a significant increase in the amount of construction on our roads. As we look forward to the next 12 months, we are committed to continuing to work with the same dedication to fulfill the promises of the PTP.

Happy New Year!

Busway Gets Commuters To Work Faster

FULL HOUSE: Passengers avoid
U.S. 1 gridlock by taking the
South Dade Busway.

It's morning rush hour, and traffic on U.S. 1 is crawling along at its usual snail's pace.

But just a few yards away, commuters like Darlene Johnson are zipping past the gridlock in stress-free comfort.

Johnson, 28, of Cutler Ridge, is one of a growing number of residents who are avoiding the congestion on U.S. 1 and saving gas by taking the Busway — South Miami-Dade's bus-only expressway.

"It's definitely a quicker ride," said Johnson, a physical therapist at Jackson Memorial Hospital who gets to work by transferring to Metrorail from the Busway. "I save mileage on my car and I'm not stressed, and it gives me a chance to sleep or read on the way to work."

The County opened a five-mile extension to the Busway last year. It now runs 13.5 miles between the Dadeland South Metrorail station and 264th Street in Naranja, with several convenient Park & Ride lots along the way.

And passengers are filling buses like never before. Average daily ridership on the Busway is 20,000, up 30 percent from a year ago.

A limited-stop route, the Busway Flyer, was begun in November 2004 as part of the People's Transportation Plan. Twenty-eight buses an hour travel on the Busway during the morning and evening rush hours, running approximately every 2 minutes. A trip from Southwest 244th Street to Dadeland South can take as little as 35 minutes. Busway fares are $1.50, and passengers can request a free transfer to Metrorail when boarding.

"It's the easiest ride in town, it's the fastest ride in town and it's the cheapest ride in town," said Miami-Dade Transit Director Roosevelt Bradley.

Construction on the Busway's final 6.5-segment to Southwest 344th Street in Florida City is expected to be completed in July 2007.

Latest Service Improvements Include 3 New Routes

Better service between West Kendall and Metrorail and a Westchester neighborhood circulator are among the new services in the County's latest round of bus service improvements.

Miami-Dade Transit last month introduced three new bus routes and implemented improvements to dozens of existing routes as part of the People's Transportation Plan (PTP).

The new routes are:

Route 136 between the Dadeland South Metrorail station and Southwest 142nd Avenue and 112th Street, with stops at The Falls and in the Howard area
Route 82 between the West Dade Regional Library and Tropical Park via 82nd Avenue and Coral Way
The Howard Killian Connection, a limited-stop minibus route between Miami-Dade College Kendall campus and the Howard community

The latest additions brought the total number of routes added in 2005 to seven. Since November 2002, when voters overwhelmingly approved the half-penny tax to fund the PTP, 24 new bus routes have been created.

December's changes also brought improvements and adjustments to more than 40 other bus routes. They include more frequent midday and weekend service and some route extensions and realignments.

"These latest improvements make transit an even more convenient choice for residents looking for an alternative to the stress and expense of driving, and they're another step in our ongoing work to fulfill the promises of the PTP," said Miami-Dade Transit Director Roosevelt Bradley.

PTP Working To Keep Roads Dry

Relief is on the way for a west Miami-Dade neighborhood long plagued by chronic flooding after storms.

As part of the People's Transportation Plan, the Miami-Dade County Public Works Department recently began work on $1.6 million in drainage improvements that will prevent severe flooding in the Midway neighborhood between Northwest 78th and 84th avenues from Seventh Street to 10th Street.

BREAKING GROUND: The People's
Transportation Plan has funded a
number of drainage improvement
projects on County roads.
Set for completion in October 2006, the project calls for drainage structures and pipe culverts, raising sections of the roadway to meet County flood criteria, and an emergency overflow to a dry retention area.

"This area has long had a history of flooding problems," said Public Works Director Esther Calas. "Once this project is completed, residents will see a significant improvement during and after rainfall events."

The project is just one of many drainage improvement initiatives funded by the People's Transportation Plan and the half-penny tax for transportation.

Roads in line for drainage upgrades include Southwest 122nd Avenue from Eighth Street to Coral Way and 244th Street from 97th Avenue to Old Cutler Road.

"Upgrading drainage conditions on the County's roadways to prevent flooding is an essential part of improving our transportation infrastructure," said Marc Buoniconti, chairman of the Citizens' Independent Transportation Trust, which oversees the People's Transportation Plan.

New Westchester Shuttle Helps Residents Get Around

SNIP, SNIP: County Commissioner

Advertising and Media Relations Chief
Michael De Cossio participate in a recent
ribbon-cutting ceremony for Route 82
in Westchester.
A new minibus route is making it easier for residents of the Westchester community in west Miami-Dade to get around.

As part of the People's Transportation Plan (PTP), Miami-Dade Transit recently introduced the Route 82 Westchester Shuttle, a new neighborhood circulator connecting the West Dade Regional Library and Tropical Park via Southwest 82nd Avenue.

The new route, which includes a stop at Westchester Mall at Coral Way and 87th Avenue, runs every 30 minutes on weekdays from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Miami-Dade County Commissioner Javier Souto, whose district includes the Westchester area, joined residents and other County officials at a recent ceremony to celebrate the new route.

"This new route provides an important service to residents who live near 82nd Avenue who previously had to walk to Coral Way or Bird Road because there was no bus service connecting these two important corridors and bus services via SW 82nd Avenue," Souto said. "Route 82 will close the loop between the two existing express bus services and allow residents along both corridors to take advantage of destinations along the opposing corridor."

Route 82 is just one of several neighborhood circulators made possible by the PTP in the last three years.

"These neighborhood circulators are bringing public transportation closer to where people live, work and shop while providing access to regional routes," Miami-Dade Transit Director Roosevelt Bradley said.

Route 82 is one of three new routes introduced on Dec. 18 as part of Miami-Dade Transit's latest round of service improvements, which also included improvements and adjustments to more than 40 existing routes.

New Bus Route Provides Direct Service To Aventura, FIU

OPEN FOR BUSINESS: County Commissioner
Barbara J. Jordan joins Miami-Dade Transit
Director Roosevelt Bradley at the recent
183rd Street MAX dedication ceremony.
A new limited-stop bus route is making transportation faster and easier for many north Miami-Dade residents — whether they're headed to work, school, or the department store.

Miami-Dade Transit recently introduced the 183rd Street MAX to provide quicker service along Miami Gardens Drive between Northwest 87th Avenue and Aventura Mall.

The new route also provides a direct link between Aventura Mall and Florida International University's Biscayne Bay campus.

Miami-Dade County Commissioner Barbara Jordan and other County officials joined local residents in a dedication ceremony in Miami Gardens on Dec. 7 to celebrate the new route.

"By providing a direct route to Aventura Mall and FIU, this new service is making it easier for people to get to work and school and helping not only the local economy but education as well," Jordan said.

By eliminating the need for a transfer, the new route saves passengers at least half an hour on transit trips between Miami Gardens and Aventura Mall.

Between the new route and Miami-Dade Transit's Route 83, buses now run every 10 minutes along Miami Gardens Drive during rush hours.

"Miami Gardens Drive is one of the most heavily traveled commuter corridors in North Miami-Dade," said Miami-Dade Transit Director Roosevelt Bradley. "The 183rd Street MAX meets an important need for limited-stop service to get residents where they need to go more quickly."

The 183rd Street MAX operates approximately every 30 minutes Monday through Saturday from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m., with the last westbound bus leaving FIU at 10:04 p.m.  On Sundays, the route operates every 30 minutes from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.  Buses run once every hour between 5 and 7 a.m. and between 6 and 9 p.m.

The route is funded by the People's Transportation Plan half-penny tax. For a route map and schedule, click here or call 305-770-3131.
