| Study Reveals Great Savings For Transit Riders |
|
A recent national study released by the American Public Transportation Association (APTA) revealed that by using public transportation families can save more than $6,200 a year on expenses.
According to APTA's President William Millar, the purpose of the study was to serve as a wake-up call, as Congress and President Bush discuss moving the country toward energy independence.
The study also found that public transit helps save motorists 1.4 billion gallons of gasoline every year, which is equivalent to 108 million fewer cars filling up at the pump.
Millar added that public transit should be included along with policy changes and commitments at all levels of government, as part of the solution in reducing dependence on oil.
Recent figures show that nationwide ridership on public transit has risen 25 percent since 1995. Locally, Miami-Dade Transit recorded 109 million boardings last year with 300,000 boardings per day.
However, industry leaders say that for mass transit expansion to take place, the federal government has to encourage private investment in rail and transit lines.

Metrorail Line Could Expand Into Miami International Airport
By 2012, passengers arriving at Miami International Airport (MIA) could directly board Metrorail and travel to downtown Miami as part of Miami-Dade Transit's future Metrorail expansion.
This possible expansion into MIA would replace a planned people mover system that was supposed to be built and largely financed by Miami-Dade County's Aviation Department.
The people mover system would be similar to the existing Metromover in downtown Miami. It would shuttle passengers between MIA and the Miami Intermodal Center (MIC) - Miami's version of Grand Central Station where different modes of transportation, such as Metrorail, Tri-Rail, Amtrak, Metrobus, Greyhound and taxis will converge. |
|
| BRINGING METRORAIL TO MIA: The expansion of Metrorail into MIA could provide a direct link for passengers traveling between the airport, downtown Miami, and the Metrorail stations in the Kendall area. |
|
 |
According to aviation officials, it is far too early to accurately say how much the Aviation Department would save if Metrorail were to be extended into MIA. However, it is possible, officials said, that at least one low-cost alternative could result in savings of approximately $150 million to $200 million of the $260 million budgeted for the people mover.
There are a few scenarios that transit consultants are considering to bring Metrorail directly into MIA. For instance, Metrorail passengers traveling from downtown Miami to the airport would arrive at the MIC from the north, stopping on the second level. The same train would continue through the center and drop passengers near the moving walkways on the third level of the airport at a new station that would be built between the Dolphin and Flamingo garages.
In the event that Metrorail goes into the airport, transit consultants would first have to solve a few operational problems that include designing an automated fare card system that can distinguish between car rental patrons who travel free and those paying the regular fare.
In addition, the seats on Metrorail trains would have to be reconfigured to better accommodate passengers traveling with luggage. |

| FTA ADMINISTRATORS TOUR TRANSIT SITES: James Simpson (left), administrator of the Federal Transit Administration, and Yvette Taylor (middle), regional administrator of FTA, accompanied by Miami-Dade Transit Director Roosevelt Bradley (right). |
|
Miami-Dade Transit (MDT) Director Roosevelt Bradley recently accompanied James Simpson, administrator of the Federal Transit Administration (FTA), and Yvette Taylor, regional administrator of FTA, on a tour of current and proposed projects under the People's Transportation Plan (PTP).
As part of the tour, Mr. Simpson and Ms. Taylor visited the site of the future Miami Intermodal Center-Earlington Heights Connector, and traveled along the future East-West and North corridors.
"This was a wonderful opportunity for Miami-Dade Transit to showcase our many assets and our County's various transit needs," said MDT Director Roosevelt Bradley.
Mr. Simpson and Ms. Taylor also attended a luncheon with transit officials where they learned more about MDT's efforts to obtain funding for the proposed rapid-transit projects. Similarly, they received updates on other projects that are important to MDT, such as the rehabilitation of Metrorail vehicles and the integration of a Universal Automated Fare Collection System.
This was Simpson's first visit to Miami-Dade County in his capacity as head of FTA. President George W. Bush appointed Simpson, who was unanimously approved by the U.S. Senate in August 2006. |

Miami Shores Village Launches New Bus Service Using PTP Dollars
Miami Shores Village initiated a free bus service last October funded by the People's Transportation Plan half-penny tax.
The Shores Shuttle operates between 1 p.m. and 6 p.m. on weekdays, and it includes popular stops, such as the Village's Hall/Brockway Memorial Library, Recreation Department, Publix, and the Doctors Charter School.
"The Shores Shuttle is primarily used by seniors shopping throughout the neighborhood, and by Doctors Charter School students attending recreation activities," said Miami Shores Village's Recreation Department Director Jerry Estep. |

|
| NEW SERVICE: The Shores Shuttle takes residents to key stops, such as the Brockway Memorial Library and the Recreation Department. |
|
 |
"The implementation of this new service has turned out better than expected," he added.
To find out more about the Shores Shuttle, residents can call 305-758-8103. |

| USE TRANSIT, SAVE MORE: The average individual savings of $6,251 is based on a household of two workers that live within walking distance of a bus or train stop while only owning one car. |
