North
Corridor Takes Big Step Forward
Miami-Dade Transit's North Corridor Metrorail expansion
project has achieved an important milestone in its
quest for federal and state matching funds.
The project recently received a favorable rating
in the Federal Transit Administration's Fiscal Year
2007 New Starts project ratings.
The federal rating is a major achievement because
it locks in a 25 percent funding commitment from
the state, which translates into $228 million for
the project. It's also an important step toward
qualifying for a 50 percent funding commitment from
the federal government. More... |

the capacity of the County's major roadways
and reduce side-street delays. |

North Corridor Takes Big Step Forward
Miami-Dade Transit's North Corridor Metrorail expansion
project has achieved an important milestone in its quest
for federal and state matching funds.
The project recently received a favorable rating in the
Federal Transit Administration's Fiscal Year 2007 New
Starts project ratings.
The federal rating is a major achievement because it locks
in a 25 percent funding commitment from the state, which
translates into $228 million for the project. It's also
an important step toward qualifying for a 50 percent funding
commitment from the federal government.
The remaining 25 percent would come from Miami-Dade County's
half-penny surtax overwhelmingly approved by voters in
November 2002 to fund the People's Transportation Plan
(PTP).

| MOVING
AHEAD: A 9.5-mile Metrorail extension project
recently earned a positive rating from the federal
government. |
|
"This is great news for Miami-Dade County," said
County Manager George Burgess. "Thanks in large part
to the steadfast support of our Mayor, Chairman Martinez and
the Miami-Dade County Board of County Commissioners, the Florida
Legislature and our entire South Florida Congressional delegation,
our plans for a first-class Metrorail system for the 21st
Century are now one very big step closer to reality."
The North Corridor would extend Metrorail 9.5 miles from the
existing Martin Luther King Jr. Plaza Metrorail station along
NW 27th Avenue to the Broward County line and is projected
for completion in 2012 if federal funding comes through. The
project is part of the proposed Orange Line, which will include
a 2.4-mile spur from the existing Earlington Heights Metrorail
station to the Miami Intermodal Center (adjacent to Miami
International Airport), and the 10.1-mile East-West Corridor
from the Miami Intermodal Center along State Road 836 to Florida
International University's South Campus.
Last year, Congress appropriated an initial $10 million for
the North and East-West Corridor projects in an early show
of support.
MDT will submit a Final Environmental Impact Statement (FEIS)
for the North Corridor project in June and a Request to Enter
Final Design in November, the final step before a funding
decision from the federal goverment.

Golden Passport Giving Seniors Independence
| GOLDEN
HONOR: Miami-Dade County Commissioner Bruno Barreiro,
center, accepts a plaque from several local senior citizen
groups honoring him for his support of the Golden Passport
program. He is joined by local seniors and Miami-Dade
Transit officials. |
|
Miami-Dade
County Commissioner Bruno A. Barreiro was recently honored for
his support of a countywide program that has been providing
seniors with free public transportation for over six years.
At a downtown Miami event to celebrate the sixth anniversary
of the Golden Passport, which lets seniors ride free on Miami-Dade
Transit, several senior citizen groups presented Barreiro with
a plaque for helping create the program.
"I'm humbled and surprised by the recognition, and I'm
proud of my support for the Golden Passport, which is playing
such an important role in the lives of so many seniors in this
county," Barreiro said. |
Created
in November 1999, the Golden Passport originally was limited to low-income
seniors, but eligibility was extended to all Miami-Dade seniors and
Social Security recipients in 2002 under the People's Transportation
Plan. About 140,000 residents take advantage of the program.
"I'm wholly dependent on mass transit and I use it for everything,"
said Stanley Shapiro, 76, who attended the event. "The Golden
Passport is of great value to the senior citizen."
Miami-Dade County is the only municipality in the nation that provides
seniors free, unrestricted access to transit.
"The Golden Passport is giving many seniors who are no longer
able to drive the opportunity to enjoy active, independent lives,"
said Miami-Dade Transit Director Roosevelt Bradley. "They can
use it to go shopping, see the doctor or visit friends or family."
As an added bonus last year, the County introduced the Golden Passport
Discount Booklet, a booklet of reusable coupons that entitles Golden
Passport holders to valuable discounts at more than 40 area businesses.
For information about applying for a Golden Passport, call 305-654-6545

CITT
Invites Citizen Input
How would you like to help decide how your People's Transportation
Plan (PTP) dollars are spent?
The Citizens' Independent Transportation Trust (CITT), the board
created by voters to oversee the PTP, is inviting residents
to attend its meetings to provide input and share their ideas
about the PTP.
The CITT meets monthly to review contracts for transit, municipal
and roadway improvements funded by the half-penny PTP tax.
"Grassroots involvement has been a hallmark of the PTP
since the 2002 campaign that led to its adoption, and we believe
it's important to continue to afford the public every opportunity
to get involved in this process," said CITT Chairman Marc
Buoniconti. "We want to encourage residents with ideas
and suggestions about the PTP to bring them to our attention
at one of our meetings." |
| HEARING
FROM THE PUBLIC: Citizens' Independent Transportation
Trust members listen to a resident at a recent meeting
of the trust, which oversees the People's Transportation
Plan half-penny tax. |
|
Most
CITT meetings are held in the Miami-Dade County Commission Chambers
in downtown Miami. However, in an effort to encourage all segments
of the community to attend, meetings also have been held at various
city halls throughout the County, including South Miami, Homestead
and Key Biscayne.
The CITT's next meeting will be held on Wednesday, March 29 at 6 p.m.
in the City of Miami Commission Chambers, 3500 Pan American Drive.
For monthly meeting schedules or more information about the CITT,
visit www.miamidade.gov/citt
or call (305) 375-1357.

Carpoolers Get Special Treatment At Dadeland North
| CARPOOL
& RIDE: A new program makes it easier for carpoolers
to find a spot at Dadeland North Metrorail station. |
|
A
new program is making it easier for carpoolers to find a spot
at one of Metrorail's busiest stations.
Under a six-month pilot project to maximize available parking
at the Dadeland North parking garage, Miami-Dade Transit is
setting aside a number of preferential parking spaces in the
garage for carpoolers and vanpoolers. Customers can take advantage
of the program by displaying their monthly Metrorail parking
permit or paying the $4 daily parking fee. No registration or
special parking permit will be required.
MDT may add more parking spaces and stations to the program
based on results. |
Patrons needing carpool partners should call South Florida Commuter
Services at 1-800-234-RIDE or visit www.1800234ride.com
for ride matches. Participants will be enrolled in SFCS's Emergency
Ride Home program, which provides six vouchers for free taxi transportation
to be used in case of emergency.
