Miami-Dade Transit Sponsors the 2007 "The American Dream" Art and Essay Contest

Miami-Dade Transit and the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Parade and Festivities Committee, Inc., sponsored an art and essay contest as part of the Martin Luther King Jr. Parade festivities that took place in January 2007. This year's theme - "The American Dream: It lives on. It moves on" - honors the legacy of dignity and worth that Dr. King envisioned for everyone.

"The parade is a celebration of our community and our history as Black people. Bands march just like they did when I was growing up in Overtown. People have worked together for many years to make this event worthy, by God's standards," said Rev. Dr. Preston W. Marshall Jr, a civil rights leader, educator, and minister who started the parade 30 years ago to educate all youth, especially Black children, of the dreams and philosophy of Dr. King.
RECOGNIZING THE ESSAY WINNERS: Miami-Dade County Commissioners Dorrin D. Rolle, District 2, and Audrey M. Edmonson, District 3, along with Miami-Dade Transit Director Roosevelt Bradley and his staff, recognize essay winners Natalia Nové and Nathalie Antoine.
As part of the festivities, students in grades K through 12 from schools located within the boundaries of the parade route were invited to keep Dr. King's heritage alive by participating in this year's art and essay contest.

"We're proud to have participated in this event, which honors a man who helped many realize the American dream. We thought it would be nice to get students involved by organizing both contests, given that transportation played such an important role in the civil rights movement," said MDT Director Roosevelt Bradley.

"Essay and art contests such as these help future generations understand the sacrifice and contributions that Dr. King and others made," he added.

Ms. Lee from Miami Edison Senior High School stands proudly next to her student, Nathalie Antoine, who is one of the essay contest winners.
For the art contest, students in elementary schools were invited to create a drawing with the theme "Trains and Buses Move the Community" to show how people use buses and trains for transportation. Students in middle and senior high schools were invited to submit a 500-word essay about "How Public Transportation Impacted the Civil Rights Movement." All of the students' entries were judged on originality and creativity.

Among the Essay Contest winners were: Natalia Nové from Charles R. Drew Middle School, Yolandy Michel from Miami Edison Middle School, and Nathalie Antoine from Miami Edison Senior High School. Also, the Art Contest winners, which included Viocile M. Douceur, Rose Jean-Joseph, and Geraldine Placide from Miami Edison Middle School, were recognized for their outstanding participation.

"I encouraged my daughter to participate in all aspects of the contest because not only is she being rewarded for her talents and skills, but also she encourages her classmates to be part of these kinds of events in our community. It is important that our children take the lead in anything they do to become good leaders," said Marzetta Stamp Nové, mother of 13-year old Natalia Nové.
This was the first time that Miami-Dade Transit joined the parade with a float, which contest winners were allowed to ride as part of the American Dream Art and Essay Contest's Grand Prize, in addition to receiving a certificate of recognition from Commissioner Audrey M. Edmonson, District 3.

"As Commissioner and on behalf of the Mayor, the Board of County Commissioners, and the residents of Miami-Dade, I take great pleasure in congratulating these students on this special occasion of being the winners of this essay and art contest," said Commissioner Edmonson.

MDT Management Participates in Strategic Planning Retreats
Miami-Dade Transit's senior management participated in three retreats, between January and February, as part of the Fiscal Year 2007 Strategic and Planning Process.

The retreats addressed three key aspects of the department's strategic direction, which include the goals of the department's personnel, how to get there, and what action plan needs to be implemented to achieve the goals.

During the first session, deputy directors and other MDT administrators gave a five-minute presentation regarding an MDT functional business area. Deputy directors and administrators sought input on three basic questions: What are the greatest challenges in the business area? What are the key objectives to achieve this year and within the next two to three years? And, what are some of the critical success factors for the business area?

IN THIS YEAR'S SESSIONS: Retreats also link and support the concurrent development of the department's Business Plan and the Resource Allocation plans.
Partners, such as suppliers and unions, also participated in the first session. The entire team produced a valuable overview of MDT's current business environment.

Overall, the expected outcomes of the retreats include the following items: alignment of MDT goals and action plans to County strategy; validation of MDT's cultural framework; the ability to analyze the agency's situational factors; identification of sustainability, which includes constraints, gaps, contingencies, and risks; and the establishment and prioritization of departmental objectives.
