"Don't Block the Box" Campaign Aims to Keep Intersections Clear
Miami-Dade County recently launched a campaign to stop drivers from creating gridlock by blocking intersections to beat the red light.
"Don't Block the Box" combines stepped up enforcement with a public education campaign to remind drivers that it is illegal to enter an intersection unless there is sufficient space on the other side to accommodate the vehicle without blocking traffic.

"Don't Block the Box" is an initiative of the Miami-Dade Police Department and MOVN (Meeting Our Vehicular Needs), an informal public-private partnership working to implement short-term solutions to traffic congestion in Miami-Dade. The public education and advertising portion of the campaign is being funded by the People's Transportation Plan.
Nearly two dozen local police agencies now monitor busy intersections throughout Miami-Dade County to identify how many cars can safely clear an |

intersection before a light change, and to stop those that would otherwise get stuck in the middle of the intersection and block traffic flow. Violators face fines of up to $500 for blocking the intersection. They also can receive moving violation points on their driver's license, and run the risk of having higher insurance rates.
"We're making a concerted effort to let people know that when they block an intersection they are -- first, breaking the law; and second, they're holding up traffic and creating a dangerous situation," said Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Alvarez. "We're taking a two-part approach to this traffic problem -- we're stepping up enforcement and we're educating drivers."
The campaign is also working to inform pedestrians that it is illegal to enter a crosswalk after the red-hand stop light begins to flash. The flashing red light gives pedestrians already in the crosswalk ample time to clear the intersection prior to the traffic light change. Visit www.miamidade.gov/movn |

| Miami-Dade Transit Launches Customer Appreciation Days |

 |
| THANKING RIDERS: Miami-Dade Transit held the first of its Customer Appreciation Days at the Dadeland South Metrorail station earlier this month to show passengers its appreciation for using public transportation. |
|
Miami-Dade Transit (MDT) began hosting a series of "Customer Appreciation Days" last month to show passengers its appreciation for using public transportation, and to better identify customer concerns.
Scheduled to take place at least every other week during morning rush hours at various transit stations, the events give passengers the opportunity to learn more about MDT's services, and provide feedback on how MDT can improve transportation services in the community. Passengers also enter raffles to win a complimentary Metropass and Metrorail parking permit.
The first Customer Appreciation Day was held at the Dadeland South Metrorail station, where more than 150 passengers entered a raffle to win a monthly Metropass and Metrorail parking permit. Miami-Dade Transit officials distributed free water bottles to grateful customers and provided updates on the People's Transportation Plan. The Miami Herald also participated by giving away complimentary newspapers. Other private sector partners will be invited to expand on the appreciation items offered to customers at future events. |
 |
Last month's inaugural event was well received by customers like Guevara Acosta, a regular transit user.
"I think it's important for Miami-Dade Transit to hear from riders like us," Acosta said. "I hope a lot of people are able to have the same opportunity."

The site, at www.miamidade.gov/transit, features a cleaner look, more user-friendly design and easier navigability. Visitors to the site will be greeted with a slideshow of rotating images of the transit system.
The website upgrade also will allow MDT to post informative videos and messages from the director. In addition, users can now enlarge the site's font size for easier viewing, in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). |
