Transit Director Rides with Customers to Hear Concerns and Suggestions Firsthand

During the past few weeks, Miami-Dade Transit Director Roosevelt Bradley and his senior staff have been riding buses and trains to learn directly from customers where service improvements are needed.

"This is part of our ongoing effort to continue providing our customers with safe, reliable, efficient, and courteous transit service," said Mr. Bradley. Even though Miami-Dade Transit has already made numerous service improvements under the People's Transportation Plan following recommendations from local residents, the agency continues to rely heavily on feedback and suggestions from customers to make the system work even more efficiently.

MAKING YOUR RIDE BETTER: Miami-Dade Transit Director Roosevelt Bradley and frequent transit rider Patricia Brooks discuss transit services.

Mr. Bradley recently rode with transit customers on Route G, traveling from 69th Street and Collins Avenue in Miami Beach to 123rd Street near Biscayne Boulevard. During his commute, Mr. Bradley met with Ms. Patricia Brooks, a frequent rider, who had much to say about transit service.

"Ms. Brooks shared with me some of the problems that need to be fixed on Route G, such as bus delays during morning and evening rush hours, buses arriving together all at once, and of bus benches located far from bus stops. Moreover, Ms. Brooks said that in the past she had contacted Customer Services to complain about these issues, but nobody contacted her back.

I assured Ms. Brooks that her complaints and concerns would be resolved promptly.

During my conversation with Ms. Brooks, I was pleased to learn that two of our bus operators, who routinely work on Route G, have been providing our customers with outstanding customer service," Mr. Bradley stated.

She placed special emphasis on service provided by bus operators while riding Route G. She referred to Mr. Alfred J. Scott and Mr. Quincy Phillips who are always courteous and professional. "They do everything possible to enhance customers' riding experience," she said.

When Ms. Brooks expressed her gratitude to the director for personally riding with her and listening to her concerns, he reiterated that the input MDT obtains from existing customers like her is vital in helping the agency create a first-class transit system.

For the next few months, Mr. Bradley has directed his management staff to also ride buses and trains to acquire additional customer concerns and suggestions on the system in order to serve them better.

"We will not stop until we talk to customers on every route and make the necessary improvements," he stated.

If you would like to send any suggestions to Mr. Bradley during this ongoing campaign, you may call him at 305-375-2597. Or send him an e-mail at rbradley@miamidade.gov. However, if you would like to send in your comments and/or concerns on the transit system, please visit www.miamidade.gov/transit and click on the feedback zone link to submit your comments.

BREAKING GROUND: Under the PTP, numerous drainage, sidewalk, and roadway improvements have been made countywide.
More Road Improvements Are Underway Thanks to PTP Funds

Thanks to the People's Transportation Plan (PTP), which established the half-penny surtax for transportation and transit improvements, a new roadway construction project and railroad crossing in Country Walk, along SW 143 Terrace, from SW 145 Place to SW 144 Avenue, broke ground on August 21, 2006.

This project will provide an alternate road for commuters to access SW 136 Street from the South.

The two-lane urban roadway project also will allow for the opening of SW 143 Terrace to facilitate and improve traffic flow between Country Walk's neighborhood and the North and South areas of the railroad tracks. This will provide connectivity and mobility for motorists and pedestrians.

The project includes the construction of a two-lane paved road, curb and gutter, drainage, sidewalk, roadway lighting, markings, signage and other traffic control devices.

Popular Transit Benefit Gets More Commuters off the Road

With gas prices skyrocketing in the last few months and traffic gridlock getting worse, commuters in South Florida are exploring commuting alternatives to their cars.

George Starks, who works as a supervisor of control services at Mercy Hospital, said commuting in South Florida these days is a nightmare. For him, using transit in the last five years has helped him to save money and time.

"After working long hours at the hospital, I don't really feel like putting up with traffic at the end of the day. Since I've been using transit, not only do I get to save more money, but also I don't have to put up with traffic anymore," said Starks.

Starks parks at the 152nd Street Park & Ride lot on US 1. Every morning he takes the bus along the South Miami-Dade Busway to Dadeland South Station, where he takes Metrorail all the way to the Vizcaya Metrorail station. There he transfers to Route 12 to reach Mercy Hospital.

WINNING OVER MORE COMMUTERS: Employee discount programs and pre-tax savings are helping Miami-Dade Transit to encourage thousands of Miami-Dade residents to leave their cars behind and get on board.

The good news is that Starks, along with many other employees from Mercy Hospital, will now be able to take advantage of a greater discount from Miami-Dade Transit's Corporate Metropass Incentive Program, which allows employers to help employees save on their commute.

Mercy Hospital, like many other companies throughout the county, recognizes the concern staff has regarding recent fluctuations in the price of gasoline. For this reason, on August 15th, Mercy Hospital introduced the Employees Commuter Subsidy Program in which the hospital pays for a substantial portion of the cost of the Metropass for each employee who rides transit as an alternative to commuting by car.

"The implementation of the Corporate Metropass Incentive Program in our hospital means that we are consistently supporting our employees in their employment with the hospital, and it shows that we care for them. This program will provide them with an alternative to commuting at a low cost. And with the hospital's subsidy and the corporate discount, this option is a tremendous opportunity for our employees," said Edward Rundle, vice president for Mercy Hospital's Human Resources Department.

Through the Corporate Metropass Incentive Program, the monthly Metropass will be offered at a highly discounted rate to over 2,000 Mercy Hospital employees.

In addition to this significant discount, the hospital employees' passes will be deducted from their paycheck using pre-tax dollars, saving them even more.

Thanks to MDT's discount program and a subsidy from the hospital, employees like Starks will pay less than $14 for their monthly Metropass and Metrorail parking permit. And best of all, it's tax-free.

Under the Corporate Metropass Incentive Program, groups of 5-99 employees can save $7.50 off the regular $75 pass, which is good for unlimited rides for the whole month on Metrobus and Metrorail. Groups of 100 or more save $10 on each monthly Metropass purchase.

Rundle emphasized that the hospital has always looked for ways to make employment a more valuable experience. "Therefore, we are sure that by offering this new benefit to our employees, it will make the commuting experience better for those who decide to take advantage of it," he said.

Within 48 hours, almost 200 employees were already enrolled in the program, which exceeded the Mercy Family expectations. Shortly after implementing the CMIP, the hospital decided to fully subsidize a new shuttle service to transport employees between the Vizcaya Metrorail station and Mercy Hospital, which will enhance their commuting experience. The new shuttle service will start as soon as next month.

For Cecilia Landis, who also works at Mercy Hospital, the use of transit was already saving her $70 a week between gas expenditures and insurance costs. Now with the remarkable discount recently implemented in the hospital, she will save even more.

"I've always ridden public transportation. Besides the fact that it helps me save money on gas, I've also noticed that Metrorail and Metrobus services have significantly improved in recent times," she said.

In the last few years, Metropass sales through the CMIP have doubled. Over 8,000 Miami-Dade County residents at more than 140 businesses and institutions now take advantage of the program helping thousands of employees like Spark and Landis enjoy a cheaper, less stressful commute.

Even though MDT staff has maintained a busy schedule of corporate outreach presentations in recent years, rising gas prices and improvements in the transit system also have helped spark interest in the program.
