Public Transportation wins the South Florida Commuter Challenge

The South Florida Commuter Challenge was won by commuters using public transportation – Tri-rail and Metrorail from the north and Metrobus and Metrorail from the south.


(Miami-Dade County, FL) -- 
Following are the results of today's South Florida Commuter Challenge:

Miami-Dade County: SW 152 Street & US 1 Park & Ride lot - one commuter 
boarded a regularly-scheduled Metrobus at 8:35 a.m. and transferred to Metrorail arriving at the Commission Chambers in downtown Miami at 9:07 a.m.  Another commuter drove a car to downtown Miami leaving South Dade at 8:35 a.m. arriving at the Government Center Commission Chambers at 9:55 a.m.

Broward County:  Tri-Rail Hollywood station, 3001 Hollywood Blvd - one   
commuter boarded Tri-Rail in Hollywood at 8:07 a.m., transferred to Metrorail and finished at the Government Center Commission Chambers in downtown  Miami at 9:00a.m. A commuter drove the same route arriving at 9:15 a.m.

Commissioner Carlos Gimenez, Chair, Regional Transportation Committee (RTC) and its respective Board members, Transit Director Roosevelt Bradley presented medals to the winners and participants.  J.W. Johnson, Transport Workers' Union (TWU) President, received an award on behalf of bus and train operators.

According to AAA's 2006 Your Driving Costs study, it costs an overall average of 52.2 cents per mile to own and operate a passenger vehicle, which equals $7, 834 per year based on 15,000 miles of driving. Monthly, weekly or daily parking in the vicinity of downtown Miami can add substantially to these costs.

The distance from South Dade to downtown Miami is 14.5 miles. The distance from Hollywood varies by ½ mile.
