Miami-Dade Transit Wants To Help You Save Money At The Gas Pump

(Miami-Dade County, FL) --
Did gas prices have you fuming the last time you pumped gas into your car?  Then this might be a good time to try alternative modes of transportation.   Miami-Dade Transit (MDT) is joining transit agencies nationwide in Dump the Pump Day on Thursday, June 8 to offer free rides that day as an alternative to driving their vehicle.

"This is an opportunity to attract new transit riders and will help them save money, wear and tear on their car and time in their commute", said Roosevelt Bradley, Director of MDT.  "With no relief in sight to record setting gas prices, residents need to be made aware that there are options to driving."

MDT will join with other public transportation systems throughout the country to demonstrate that transit offers the quickest, easiest alternative to the high cost of driving.  National Dump the Pump Day is sponsored by the American Public Transportation Association (APTA), a non-profit association of more than 1,600 member organizations, including 400 public transit agencies.

To participate in National Dump the Pump Day, interested individuals can log onto www.miamidade.gov/transit and print as many vouchers as necessary for free rides on June 8 (one coupon per trip).  The voucher is good for rides all day on all MDT buses and rail and must be presented to the bus operator or security guard at Metrorail stations.

After housing, transportation is the second highest cost for American families outpacing both food and health care costs.  Since January 2003, gas prices have increased by 100 percent.  As gasoline prices have increased, public transit systems across the United States are experiencing an increase in ridership.  "People use public transit more frequently when the cost of gas rises," said APTA President William Millar.  "National Dump the Pump Day on June 8 will highlight, that by using public transit, people can beat high gas prices, help reduce traffic congestion and assist our country in beating our addiction."
