Miami-Dade Transit (MDT) will increase its base fare from $1.50 to $2 each way starting on Wednesday, October 1, 2008. The price of the monthly Metropass will increase from $75 to $100. Metrorail parking fees also will increase.
This fare increase is only MDT's second in the last 18 years. MDT last raised its fares in 2005, from $1.25 to $1.50. It had remained at $1.00 since 1990.
Rising diesel prices have caused almost half the nation's transit agencies to increase bus fares in the last several months. Higher electricity costs also have caused 69% of transit agencies to increase their fares in rail.
The Golden and Patriot Passport programs are not affected. Customers also can take advantage of group discounts of between $10 and $15 and tax savings a month if they purchase the Corporate Pass through a pre-tax payroll deduction from their employer.
