Miami-Dade Transit asks riders for donations of toys for needy kids

(Miami-Dade County, FL) --
For the 12th year in a row, Miami-Dade Transit is asking customers to help brighten the holidays for needy children by donating toys to MDT’s annual Toy Drive.

From Monday, Dec. 8 to Friday Dec. 12, residents are asked to drop off their donations of new, unwrapped toys in collection boxes located at Palmetto, Okeechobee, Martin Luther King, Allapattah, Civic Center, Government Center, South Miami, Dadeland North and Dadeland South Metrorail stations.

Unlike past years, MDT will not be giving away tokens in exchange for toys this year. Tokens are being phased out as MDT installs a new automated fare collection system that will work with a reloadable EASY Card.

POWER 96’s Lucy Lopez will kick off the toy drive with a live remote from Government Center on Monday, Dec. 8, from 7 to 9 a.m. The fun continues on Wednesday, Dec. 10, with WEDR 99 JAMZ broadcasting the Lorenzo “Ice Tea” Thomas show live from 2 to 6 p.m. at Government Center. The toy drive concludes on Friday, Dec. 12, with AMOR 107.5 broadcasting the Desayuno Musical morning show with Javier Romero, Paula Arcila and Osvaldo Vega from 6 to 10 a.m. at Government Center. Each live remote will feature prize raffles.

“These are tough economic times, so this year it’s more important than ever to make sure needy kids don’t go without the joy of the holiday season,” said MDT Director Harpal Kapoor. “We’re hoping our riders will come through for us again this year and show their holiday spirit of giving by donating toward our toy drive.”
