Transit hybrid bus on display at Living Green Expo

(Miami-Dade County, FL) --
Residents can get a sneak peak at Miami-Dade Transit's fuel-efficient future at this weekend's Miami Living Green Expo.

MDT will have a state-of-the-art hybrid-electric bus on display throughout the two-day Expo, which highlights environmentally-friendly government and private sector initiatives, services and products. The Expo is set for Aug. 15 and 16 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the DoubleTree Miami Mart Hotel & Expo Center, 711 NW 72nd Ave.

The 40-foot hybrid bus, manufactured by Gillig, is similar to buses MDT is planning to purchase as it converts its fleet from conventional diesel to hybrid beginning next year. Transit personnel will be available to answer questions and give tours inside the bus.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recently awarded the County $730,000 in stimulus funds to help purchase five new hybrid buses. The buses will be placed in service by late 2010 and will result in a 20 percent increase in fuel mileage and a 20 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.

Beginning next year, MDT also will run 60-foot hybrid buses on the I-95 Express Lanes between downtown Miami and Fort Lauderdale with federal and state funding.

Admission to the Expo is $10. For more information about the Expo, call 305-412-0000.
