Pedestrian Overpass at the University Metrorail Station closer to reality

(Miami, November 17, 2014) - Miami-Dade Transit is moving forward with the construction of the pedestrian overpass at the University Metrorail station.

The overpass is designed to provide a safer crossing for pedestrians and bicyclist to cross the heavily traveled U.S. 1 at Mariposa Court. Elevators and escalators will allow easy access to the overpass from both sides of U.S.1.

Miami-Dade Transit is preparing the construction contract documents and is expected to advertise the project for construction next week.
A public information meeting will be held tomorrow, November 18, 2014, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., at the theater at the Coral Gables War Memorial Youth Center located at 405 University Drive, in Coral Gables, to offer the public and media an opportunity to learn more about the status of project.

“Since the beginning, I’ve been fully committed to the construction of a pedestrian overpass at the University Metrorail station. I believe it’s an important project that will allow University of Miami students, our transit riders, and many others to safely cross busy U.S.1.,” said Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos A. Gimenez, who has been a champion for the project ever since he served as Miami-Dade County Commissioner for District 7.

Funding for the project of approximately $6 million comes from County transportation surtax funds, the Florida Department of Transportation and the Federal Transit Administration.
